What does it mean?

I read, a lot. Often, I encounter a word that I do not know the exact meaning but can surmise the meaning from the text.  I know spendthrift meaning is a person that spends excessively.  I know that thrifty means to spend responsibly. So, why is thrift in spendthrift the opposite of thrift in thrifty?

Thrift...

1. economical management; economy.

2. Also called thrift′ institu`tion. a savings and loan association, savings bank, or credit union.

3. any alpine and maritime plant belonging to the genus Armeria, of the leadwort family, having pink or white flowers, esp. A. maritima, noted for vigorous growth.

4. vigorous growth.

5. Obs. prosperity.

Thrifty...

(of a person or their behavior) using money and other resources carefully and not wastefully:

Spendthirft...

a person who spends money in an extravagant, irresponsible way:

So, why the opposite meaning from two seemingly similar words? The web knows!

"Spendthrift" derives from an obsolete sense of the word "thrift" to mean prosperity rather than frugality, so a "spendthrift" is one who has spent their prosperity

Robert's Christmas gifts

So, Robert asked for money for Christmas. I think most of his gifts were cash except for a few minor things. I know I got him a couple of shirts. Yesterday, he said he wanted to get an iPhone with his money. I had wondered what he was spending the money on. As it turns out, nothing. He still had most of his Christmas cash, enough to pay for the phone with $25 left over. He is not a spendthrift.

We got the phone and got it set up. I hope he likes it. He has always use android. They say iPhones are easy.  Sister will need to help as I do not speak Apple.

Sister Helen has been working on her end of times again.  Me, not so much. I guess she wants to make it easy on those left behind by taking care of everything herself.

When we were taking care of George's funeral arrangement, Son said something to the effect of I guess you have taken care of the details of your funeral details.  I told him no, that was his job.  I buried Baby Sister, Dad, and Mom and he could do the same for me. I did make the decisions about George's funeral, but Son generously paid the full cost. I don't really care about my funeral.  I will not be there. It is my absolute belief that no one ever has or ever will care about their own funeral after they are dead.  Funerals are really for the living.  Only the living care about them.  Only the living are in attendance.

I think the Repubs have been making arrangements for a funeral all week. We can only sit on the sidelines and cheer.

Coffee?

Betty send me birthday money. I spent a little of it on this little blue speckled coffee pot to store coffee for the coffee maker. l already had the blue bowl that I put the coffee filters in. I also bought the clear glass container for a cookie jar.  See thru cookie jars work best so everyone knows you have cookies. 

So it begins, the next quarter.
