Powell DNA

It has been about a year now since we did the test. There has been no change in matches within the Powell surname group for us. We have NO exact matches in the Powell surname tested at Family Tree DNA. There are 5 DNA samples in the Powell group that have a generic distance of 1 on the 12 marker test. That means one or two of the 12 markers are different.

Now, sister Betty is once again voicing doubt that Charles was really a Powell because of no matches within the Powell group. We may as well use these results to doubt that we are human. There are 441 exact 12 marker matches within all the DNA tested at Family Tree, but there are exactly 2 exact 25 marker matches in the 152,614 DNA samples tested at FT, and of course, their names are not Powell (Marshall and Gregory). Of the 65,008 samples tested for 37 marker DNA, FT has conducted so far, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA are exact matches to our Powell DNA.

DNA has made monkeys of our Powell ancestors.

Patsy's Garden

This is the one flower that lived of the ones I got at Patsy's old house last year. Patsy says it is butter and eggs or wild snapdragon. I searched for information about this butter and eggs and it is classified as an obnoxious weed. The only thing is, that plant has flowers that are about 1 inch long and look like a snapdragon flower. I have not seen the flower on this plant either at Pat's or here, but this one is budded out and ready to bloom. The blooms are tiny little (about an eighth of an inch across) things all clustered at the top of the plant. I don't see how these can bloom out into 1 inch blooms. I think I will officially dub this the 'What's This' flower.



This is where I planted the little piece of Patsy's pink rose I was able to get. You can barely see it in this picture. It is the 'stick' next to the metal pole. It has really good cow barn dirt here that George got me last year from the old barn site. I think I can get it to grow here.




This is Patsy's pink rose by the front porch after I cut it back to make it easier to dig up a piece of it. I still did not get a very good root, but I think if I baby it this summer, I can get it to live.





This is Patsy's garden down by the red dirt road. I made George get me some barn dirt for this too. This is all iris, orange day lilies, and daffodils that I think will grow without regular watering. This is down by the road and it is a lot of trouble to drag a water hose down there. There is also a forthsyia, 2 roses and another unknown bush from Patsy's place here. I have added hay for a mulch around the outside and I think I can get this stuff to grow here. We planted red clover all along this bank, but I don't know if it will grow either. George put red Clay and railroad ties here because it washes so much. I planted the clover, hoping to get something besides weeds to grow because he can not mow it. Actually, most weeds will not even grow in red clay. I may try the 'What's This' down here.

Patsy, What's This???????????

I went up to Ridgedale and stole some more of this. It is growing all over around where the Lilac was planted. It is about 5 or 6 inches tall and just grows all over under these bushes. I like things that do not need a lot of care, and this has not had any 'care' in about 10 years and is still going strong, but what is it?



This is the big Lilac bush.





These are white daffodils with yellow centers. I did not have any like this. I had yellow and white but not white with yellow centers. Now I have some if they live. They probably will. They are easy to transplant almost any time of year.






Here is the front bed. The Lilac is on the far end and then that white thing that I think is a bridal wreath then forsythia then I think another Lilac. The little short flowers that I like were under the Lilac in the background, mostly anyway.







This thing was growing corner at the back of the house on the left side of the house (that is the my left as I faced the back of the house). Did you plant this? I know you can't tell much about it from this, but it has little pink pointed buds. There was a bunch of it much shorter than this, like a foot or shorter on the right side of the porch in front and I got several of them. I am thinking maybe they are wild bushes that blew in from the field and I will probably not be able to get rid of them if I get them started, so I better figure out what they are before fall.


I got one small piece of the pink rose bush by the front door. I took a photo of it that I will post later. It was still hard to get any of it because all the shoots were coming off the main stalk and it was really large. I found one piece growing from a shoot about 6 inches out from the main bush and got that. I hope it lives. I got lots of iris and the orange day lilies. I got a few of the little purple grape hyacinths. Then I got several pieces of the other roses growing over to the right of the house. Knowing Patsy, I am thinking they may just be the old wild pink rose and I may not be too proud of them either. There were 4 or 5 tulips, but they were too deep to dig up. I am happy with what I got.

New Neighbors moving in

The ?????????? Place

This is a 1985 land owners map with the area I was taking photos of below. The red lines are lines I drew that approximate the new road for this 'fox wood' subdivision of pasture and grey chat road. You can see that on this map, Virgil and Lois own all this land. David said Lois sold at least part of this before she died and now whoever bought it is trying this scam to get people to buy it in small lots.

What I really wanted to know is who lives at the end of the dirt road (CR 344 on here and CR 849 by the current road marker). This says it is Gene Combs. So, now I know. I never knew exactly where Gene Combs lived.

What I remember about this land that the Morris's bought sometime in the 70's?? was that Daddy called it the 'Myers place'. That may be wrong, but that is the way I remember it. Sometimes I remember things that ain't.

I see that Virgil Myers owns land connected to this. I am thinking the Morris' bought this land from Virgil or some of his kin. But, it is likely that Jessie Tom Maples lived on this little road in one of the old home places I saw. Jessie died in 1932, but his wife Mary Jane lived to 1955. Their daughter, Etha Maples Dillon and her husband Lon Dillon may have owned the place after that. Etha died in 1968. I remember their son Jessie Dillon living in a little shack at Coin next to the Church house.
